Why Be Concerned about Healthcare Violence?

Abuse is on the rise

  • Assaults are occurring with increasing frequency and with mounting violence.

YOU could be at risk

  • Emergency Room workers face substantially elevated risks of physical assaults compared to other health care settings. However, they are not the only ones facing the prospect of physical assault.
    • Non-ER hospital staff, residential and non-residential treatment center employees, community care staff, and field workers are also at risk.

It’s a Violation of Your Legal Right to Job Safety

  • You have the right to be  safe from harm in the workplace.
    • Not only do workers have the right to a safe workplace, the law mandates it.
    • OSHA law requires your workplace employer to maintain the safety of ALL healthcare workers.

Healthcare Violence Affects Everyone

Healthcare violence assault affects everyone: the victim; his friends, families and colleagues; those who witness the abuse; the employer; the consumer; and the community at large. The affects, both direct and indirect, are manifested as physical injury; emotional trauma; financial damage; legal and liability risks; decreased quality and quantity of services; and increased costs of services.

  • Healthcare violence directly affects
    • the victim, who suffers
      • physical trauma or injuries
      • emotional trauma such as PTSD
      • financial damage due to lost work days resulting from an event
    • the victim’s friends, colleagues and families, and those who hear or bear witness to the abuse
  • Healthcare violence indirectly affects
    • the employer:
      • via potential financial legal, liability and litigation repercussions, as well as loss of productivity
    • you, the consumer and the community at large:
      • employer costs and losses are inevitably passed on to the consumer
